College Admission - Essay Example One of the assets that benefits a new college student is cultural capital. Students who come from a family that has a tradition of college education have an advantage in knowing what to expect when they arrive at the college gate. In addition, they have been aware of how to prepare for college, which high school courses to take, and how to write an admissions essay. Leibowitz defines cultural capital as "an attitude of certainty and entitlement, which is close to 'recognition' or the sense of being recognized as a learner" (265). This additionally adds to the motivation of the student as "social and cultural capital have a positive effect on student persistence in postsecondary education" (Wells). This advantage can mean the difference between persevering in the face of adversity, or dropping out after struggling for one semester. Failing to prepare for college is the number one cause of failure in the academic setting. Students not only need to learn what to study, they need to be instructed on how to study. High schools with low numbers of students who plan on college usually don't spend their time instructing the senior class on how to write a college essay. For the few that do get accepted and enter college, the rigors of the courses can be overwhelming. According to Contreras, "When they are presented with college-level work, they think they have landed on Mars without a dictionary. The world of learning is a foreign land to them". New students will need to be skilled at writing, reading, research, and critical thinking. Many of these activities are considered non-essential activities in many of our poorer schools. Take a look at the high school that the student attended for a good predictor of the potential for success at college. In addition to the social capital and preparation that helps guide a student in their selection of an appropriate school and a major, there is the pragmatic challenge of getting accepted. Limited numbers of openings often mean some people are eliminated. People who have had less of an advantage in preparing for the SAT or honors courses, may be rejected and repeat the family's history of failing to attend college. This has often been a disadvantage of people that are challenged by their racial or ethnic, minority, or socio-economic status. Affirmative action policies have attempted to compensate for this inequality in the educational system. However, it has been the subject of decades of debate. Ill-prepared students will naturally do poorly on the SAT, while more affluent students will have access to individual instruction on taking this critical test. However, "When a task force in 1977 recommended discontinuing the SAT, many professors were suspicious of what they perceived to be an "anti-testing" bias; they thought that affirmative action was undermining standards and that criticisms of the SAT were just a part of racial politics" (Snares). Many universities have attempted to incorporate both test scores and diversity as measures of the contribution to the institution as well as markers for probable success. With the tax rate that is in effect right now, there are so many flaws and loop holes that the system is easily manipulated. The rich do not pay their fair share of taxes, because they have found ways to avoid them. The middle class looks for ways around paying taxes through things like tax breaks. And the poor ends up paying fewer taxes then what they wind up getting back in the end, giving them no incentive to make a lot of money. If a person works hard and gets a raise that will put him in a higher tax bracket, he could actually be making less money with the raise. Also, the government constantly looks for new ways to tax in order to pay for education, military, health care, and more. To consider what's right and what's wrong, compare sales tax and income tax. Say the sales tax in your state is 10%. Your "taxable amount" is the total of all that you purchase. You go to the store and by something for $20, you will pay 10%, or $2 tax. Perfection, what is it? Is it getting things totally the way we want it? Who says what perfection is? In our Christian life, God says what perfection is, but if God says what perfection is and he is perfect perfection, how can we as humans make it to that level of perfection? The Bible talks about perfection in many ways. Most of the time it is used in the form of a human’s spiritual maturity. Humans will never reach perfect perfection until they get to heaven. While we are still here on earth, we are continually striving for another meaning of the word perfect, which is the perfection that God has, actual perfection. This basically means that the old covenant really did not do anything for them, but it made t hem eligible for the new covenant, which in turn made them perfect. All of the meanings basically mean known fully, or fully mature, or complete. For what we are learning here, we are going to look at only two previously stated meanings. Those meanings can be found in Philippians 3:12 and 3:15. They are actual perfection (God’s perfection) and spiritual maturity (a Christian’s perfection). Philippians 3:15 says that whoever is perfect we are supposed to be in the same mind as Paul, but if they are not, God would reveal it to them. If this were actual perfection we as humans would not be able to attain it, but, on the other hand, if we are not as spiritually mature as God wants us to be, he could let us know and lead us in that direction. The meaning of perfect is totally opposite in Philippians 3:12. Paul talks about not having gotten to the point of being perfect. Paul is human so until he reaches heaven he will never attain the actual perfection. He will be t rying to get closer but he will not reach it until heaven.
